"The Emerald / EFMD Outstanding Doctoral Research Award has come as a wonderful Christmas gift! One of the main challenges that Doctoral students in India face is the lack of opportunities to network sufficiently with leading researchers in their fields and to be able to benchmark their work against similar work being done elsewhere in the world. These awards help significantly to bridge this lacuna since the evaluation is done by leading experts in the area. My sincere thanks to Emerald and EFMD for providing such an opportunity."

"It is a great honour for us to be awarded this research fund award provided by Emerald as it is the first time it has been awarded in this subject area in China. In July 2007, I was recruited as the Technical Executive of the Digital Library Administration Division, National Library of China (NLC), being involved in the China National Digital Library development and services. My work aims to bring readers with the abundant digital information resources stored in the NLC through the latest IT technologies. 'Any person, any time and anywhere', i.e. to serve as many people as possible and to access the information as easily as possible, is the fundamental criteria of building up the China National Digital Library. Our research proposal does fit this purpose well. I have just been back to work on my current job for only one year after 14 years studying and working in the West as an IT professional. Being awarded this research funding, I feel is a really good start in working at home, and we are certainly encouraged to continue our work in supporting the dissemination of knowledge for social good in China."
(Dr Bin Wu, Technical Executive Administration Division, National Library of China).
"It was a great honour to be one of the members of the judging panel for 2007/2008 Emerald Research Fund Awards. I was delighted to see a great number of applications, among which was so much excellent work and so many solid research proposals in the field of modern library and information services with the help of the latest technologies. To me, the process of judging is also a process of learning. It is difficult but interesting and enjoyable."
(Dr Jianzhong Wu, Director of Shanghai Library, EAB Member of Library Management).
"Judging any sort of award competition is not something I am often asked to do in my professional life, so I was more than pleased to accept the honour of supporting the valuable and meaningful goals of the Emerald Research Fund Award 2007/2008. When I received the submissions for judging the Chinese LIS category, I realised that I was faced with a daunting task which I carried out with it great responsibility. Of course, like any judge, I needed to be fair and unbiased as I read and re-read the proposals. As a life-long 'friend of China', what made it even more demanding was the sheer range and worth of proposals on offer, many of which were super ideas with great potential for the benefit of the Chinese people. All in all, the experience was for me immensely challenging and rewarding. I congratulate the winner, Bin Wu, wholeheartedly, and offer my very best wishes that his research will bring concrete results for China."
(Dr Colin Storey, University Librarian, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shatin, Hong Kong, EAB Member of Library Management).
“I was extremely impressed with the range and the number of applications for this prestigious award. The range of applications in terms of ideas, the different areas of China and types of library impressed me greatly. Overall, I found it very difficult to judge but greatly enjoyed the task. When one has a good field of applications any reader of them will learn a lot. I certainly did. Bin Wu is a worthy winner and I congratulate him.”
(Mr Steve O'Connor, University Librarian, Pao Yue-kong Library, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Editor of Library Management and of Library Management China).
"Winning the 2007/2008 Emerald Research Fund Award: Indian LIS category has been a very exciting and prestigious milestone in my career for me. Being a winner always gives you a sense of achievement and endorsement. The funding and the recognition are both critical for the success and impact of our study. Being an information scientist, I take a 360-degree view of information and study information life-cycles from different perspectives. I have ventured into working on social network analysis (SNA) over the last 2-3 years, through various academic pursuits such as organizing an international conference (www.infovision2007.org) and working with a doctoral student and writing papers. The domain of SNA is a fascinating area of study and the development of web 2.0 technologies has further deepened, broadened and strengthened its application areas. This Emerald award will further augment our research efforts in this area. Our winning proposal 'Networks and turning points: an exploration of the dynamics of academic networks and social movements in India’ is essentially a pilot project to explore the linkages between scholarship and activism in the area of ‘globalization’. We plan to carry out an empirical study using SNA tools and approaches. I commend the efforts of Emerald in encouraging and supporting research through this award. I truly believe that such research funding and recognition help strengthen academic research in many different ways."
(Shalini R. Urs, University of Mysore, Manasagangotri)
"I was delighted to be a part of the judging process along with Dr. Kumbar. The quality of proposals received was good. The processing of selecting one out the last three was really tough. I would like to add here that this initiative of Emerald Publishing is commendable and wish that library professionals use this opportunity to churn out quality LIS research. I would take this opportunity to request Emerald to increase research funding to at least three LIS proposals in the coming years."
(H. Anil Kumar, Librarian and Head NICMAN, Indian Institute of Management, Vastrapur, Ahmedabad)
"I was indeed very happy to be given the task of evaluating the proposals and recommending the suitable ones for the award. It was not all that easy to select and recommend one for funding, as we had a few very good proposals. It is so encouraging to see Emerald coming forward to fund research proposals in library services area. I am sure this award will begin to attract more and more proposals in the coming years and Emerald will come forward to support more than one proposal."
(Dr T S Kumbar, Resource Centre, DA-IICT, Gandhinagar, India)
"I am very pleased that I was involved with the judging process both as a judge and a coordinator, which has given me an insight into some of the research that is taking place in India ... It was not an easy decision to pick the winner from the short-listed ones as they were all of very high calibre."
(Kasturi Narashiman, coordinator of the judging panel, Learning and Teaching Fellow (Retired), The University of Bolton, UK, Visiting Professor, GRD Institute of Management, Coimbatore, India, Advisory Council Member, National Academy of Management and Entrepreneurship, Bangalore, India)

"The winning project, ‘Promoting effectiveness of knowledge transmission in Chinese rural areas: multimedia education software development and distribution channel design’, has two major strengths. First, it is on an extremely important topic. Knowledge development in the rural sector to enhance quality and production among the rural community has clear practical implication and pragmatic value. Second, the research design is well thought-out in terms of the treatment effect (different channels) and the comparison of effectiveness among them. The researchers have demonstrated clear knowledge of the phenomenon and utilize solid scientific research skills to study the proposed knowledge transmission approaches. I expect the outcomes of this project will inform both practice and future research involving field experimentation. It is a worthwhile project to support and I look forward to seeing the outcomes from this research effort. The three judges of the International Association for Chinese Management Research are pleased with the opportunity to contribute to the selection of this excellent proposal."
(Professor Anne S. Tsui, Motorola Professor of International Management Founding President, International Association for Chinese Management Research Editor-in-Chief, Management and Organization Review)
"It was a privilege to be involved with the judging process for the 2007 Emerald Chinese Research Fund Awards (RFAs) and to see the excellent work that is being developed by our scholarly colleagues in China. Only through a process based on a vigorous application of the RFA criteria relating to the social good, originality and innovation, contribution to theory and its application, appropriateness and application of the methodology, implications for theory and practice were we able to identify the most outstanding submissions. The finalist group was an interesting mix of employee wellbeing, social welfare and sustainability research, thoughtfully proposed and utilizing the available literature to inform the respective approaches and anticipate the likely findings and outcomes"
(Professor David Lamond PhD FANZAM, Foundation Dean, International Business School Kochi and Editor, Journal of Management History)

"I am very pleased to be involved with the judging process of the Emerald Research Fund Awards competition. Many of the submissions were of high academic standard, original, innovative and provide outstanding contributions that linked theory with practice. I have enjoyed reading all the research proposals received. The keen interest, enthusiasm and dedication with which these proposals were put together were clearly evident. The competition was intense and it was not easy to select an entry given their comparatively high quality. But a hard decision had to be made collectively among all my fellow judges. Finally, the research proposal which matched the theme of the competition most closely, namely to increase effectiveness of the knowledge creation and transmission process emerged the winner. This Emerald initiative has certainly served to further scholarship among researchers in China as well as their collaborators from other countries."

"It was an honour and great privilege to have served as a member of the judging panel for the Emerald Research Fund Awards. I thoroughly enjoyed reading all the proposals from Africa: they were original research ideas and involved rigorous research methodologies. The work of the winner will no doubt contribute to a better understanding of knowledge creation in an African context. As a member of the executive board of the International Academy of African Business and Development, I see the Emerald Research Award to an African scholar as another manifestation of Emerald’s long-standing commitment to promote scholarship in Africa.
