Announcing the winners

Emerald and CAPES library consortia (A Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superioris) are offering a funding grant for a research project that will contribute to the development of library and information science in Brazil. The funding grant of £2,500 (US $4,000 equivalent) is available for research that addresses the dissemination of knowledge for the social good with a specific focus towards the benefit of Brazil.

The judging panel have now completed their assessment of all submissions and Emerald and CAPES are happy to announce the results. A great number of high-quality submissions were received, making the decision of the judging panel an extremely difficult one. Ultimately the panel selected the following winning proposal:

"A publishing system to extract and represent the knowledge content of scientific articles on biomedical sciences in machine-processable format"

Prof. Carlos Henrique Marcondes, Information Science Department, UFF - Universidade Federal Fluminense
with the following research team:
Prof. Marília Alvarenga Rocha Mendonça, Information Science Department, UFF - Universidade Federal Fluminense
Luciana Reis Malheiros, doctoral student, Physiology and Pharmacology Department, UFF - Universidade Federal Fluminense
Leonardo Cruz da Costa, doctoral student, Computer Science Department, UFF - Universidade Federal Fluminense
Gabriela Veras de Moraes, student, Biomedicine graduate Course, Biomedical Institute, UFF - Universidade Federal Fluminense

The winning project, linked to the area of Knowledge Representation, aims to refine the search engines of the collections of libraries. The idea is to summarize the research problem that has been effectively resolved by a text or scientific article. You could say, for example, that the author X, Y in the article, showed that the substance causes the effect K Z. These summaries would allow the recovery of scientific information in a collection is not limited to the frequency of keywords, enabling an advanced search that included the findings attributed by the authors of the research index.

The award ceremony took place during the celebrations of the ninth anniversary of the Portal de Periódicos da Capes. The award was presented by Vice President of Emerald for the Americas, David Butler, to Leonardo Cruz, one of the co-authors and a member of the research group headed by Marcondes. "This is recognition of a five-year work and generated two doctoral theses. The group is very happy", commented Leonardo Cruz.

Testimonial
“I am very honoured to have won the 2008/2009 Emerald/CAPES Brazilian LIS Research Fund Award. I am also grateful to my research team which has all the merits for this award and to the panel of judges who examined my proposal and selected it for this award. I consider this award as an endorsement of the research proposal of providing scholars with a semantically richer publishing environment. Finally, I congratulate Emerald Group Publishing Limited for their involvement in this kind of scholarly activity.”
Professor Carlos Henrique Marcondes

Emerald and CAPES would like to thank all the many applicants for their research proposals. It is a shame that there can only be one winner.
