Library Hi-Tech Award at the Deutscher Bibliothekartag
Emerald presents first German Library Hi-Tech Award at the Deutscher Bibliothekartag (German Libraries Conference), Mannheim, Germany, 3-6 June 2008
UK, May 08 – Emerald Group Publishing Limited is delighted to announce the first German Library Hi Tech Award. The winner, to be announced, will receive the €600 prize from the hands of Barbara Lison, President of BID (Bibliothek Information Deutschland), and Prof Dr Michael Seadle, Editor of Library Hi Tech and Director of the Institute of Library and Information Sciences at Humboldt University, Berlin, during the Deutscher Bibliothekartag in Mannheim, Germany. The award ceremony, on invitation only, will be held on Tuesday, 3 June, from 2-3 pm, in the VIP room of the Congress Centre Rosengarten.
Michael Seadle explains, "The intention of the prize is to honour the author who has made a significant contribution to the German library community in the area of technology. The selection of the winner will be made independently of the editorial staff, and the proposed research need not have been published in Library Hi Tech"
The judging committee involved in selecting the winner were chosen from the major technology centres for German librarianship. They are Prof Dr Peter Schirmbacher, professor at the Institute of Library and Information Science at the University of Humboldt, Berlin, Dr Norbert Lossau, Director of the State and University Library at the University of Göttingen, and Dr Hildegard Schäffler, Head of the Journals and Electronic Media at the Bavarian State Library.
Library Hi-Tech Awards have existed in the United States for some years, in association with LITA, the Library and Information Technology Association.
Other Emerald activities at the Deutscher Bibliothekartag will include:
- "Internationales Publizieren mit Library Hi Tech – Ein Workshop für Autoren", an author workshop, presented by Michael Seadle and Elke Greifeneder, Assistant Editor of Library Hi Tech, on Wednesday, 4th June, from 8.30-9.30 am in the Stamit Room. It will focus on how to get published in international library journals.
- "Shakers and movers on information – where do we stand internationally?", a panel session moderated by Dr John Peters, CEO of Emerald. This event will take place on Thursday, 5th June in the Mozart Room.

Biographies of the Library Hi-Tech Award judging committee
- Professor Dr Peter Schirmbacher is a professor at the Institute of Library and Information Science at Humboldt University – Berlin. He is also director of the Computer and Media Service (formerly the computer centre) at Humbolt. He is a leader in DINI (Deutsche Inititativ fur Netzwerkinformation) and in Electronic Theses and Dissertations.
- Dr Norbert Lossau is director of the State and University Library at the University of Gottingen, including its Digitization Centre. He is also leader in DINI, and has held positions at Bielefeld and Oxford Universities.
- Dr Hildegard Schäffler is head of journals and electronic media at the Bavarian State Library and is a member of the Library Hi Tech Editorial Advisory Committee.
