Editorial objectives

The International Journal of Health Care Quality Assurance provides a forum for the international exchange of theoretical and practical aspects of quality and management in health care and helps to develop knowledge about continuous improvement and its implementation in health care organisations.

Editorial criteria

The journal publishes

• Qualitative and quantitative research articles on all aspects of quality in health care. Manuscripts must clearly demonstrate relevance to practice
• Case studies detailing real-life examples of quality assurance techniques and management within health and social care settings
• Special issues on topical themes

Topics addressed are clinical, managerial and educational in scope.

Scope/Coverage

• Successful quality/continuous improvement projects
• The use of quality tools and models in leadership management development such as the EFQM Excellence Model, Balanced Scorecard, Quality Standards, Managed Care
• Issues relating to process control such as Six Sigma, Leadership, Managing Change and Process Mapping
• Improving patient care through quality related programmes and/or research

Articles that use quantitative and qualitative methods are encouraged.

Topicality

Existing literature can often appear to lack a coherent and interdisciplinary focus for particular quality concerns in this field. It is clear, however, that in an industry so beleaguered by administrative, staffing and financial difficulties, service quality standards, training and management are notoriously difficult to achieve. The journal offers information and guidance on continuous improvement programmes to raise service and performance standards.

The journal offers a definition of quality within the context of health care, examines managerial and planning methods, discusses the implications of introducing and maintaining quality initiatives, and describes case histories.
