Submissions are invited for a special issue of Management of Environmental Quality exploring mathematical models for the management of sustainable development. It is widely reckoned that the field of sustainable development can be conceptually broken into three constituent parts: environmental sustainability, economic sustainability and sociopolitical sustainability.

Nowadays, sustainable development is the objective of most research projects and it is becoming more and more an interesting field of research since it integrates the study of the dynamics of complex systems under a multicriteria viewpoint.

Despite this, there is not a common methodology addressing how to make and to keep a system sustainable, quantifying sustainability according to a proper mathematical model.

This special issue aims to start an avenue for integrated research work that takes a systemic or holistic perspective based on a mathematical formulation in relation to sustainability studies where the effects on the environment are clearly quantified.

Potential coverage

Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit manuscripts that advance the science and practice of sustainable development. While papers in any area (such as for example, environment, transport, energy …) of sustainable development are welcome, the editors are especially interested in those dealing with identification, control and decision support system techniques allowing to quantify in an objective way how decisions can affect the sustainability of a system, from an environmental as well as from an economic, risk and social viewpoint. Papers which provide guidelines on how to support decisions on a mathematical basis only will be considered.

The coverage includes, but is not limited to:

Decision making techniques and territorial management

Decision support systems for sustainable development

Identification of sustainable system indicators

Multicriteria decision making for sustainability development

Planning, measurement, control of system sustainability

Safety and security of human and societal dynamics

Case studies are welcome, but not limited to, the following topics: agriculture, logistics, energy systems, tourism, transport, water management.

Submission guidelines and further information

Papers describing an insight which is not based on a mathematical approach to decision making and/or the identification and/or the control of the system sustainability or which can not, in general, provide a quantitative approach to support decision makers in their path towards sustainability and on the related effects on the quality of the environment will not be considered. Submitted papers should not have been previously published nor be currently under consideration for publication elsewhere.

All manuscripts should be prepared according to the author guidelines located at: http://info.emeraldinsight.com/products/journals/author_guidelines.htm?id=meq

All papers will be double blind reviewed following the journal’s normal review procedure.

Submission Deadlines

The special issue publication is expected to publish in October 2009

Abstracts should be sent by e-mail to the Guest Editors by 15th March

Final papers will be required by 15th June
