Special Issue on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in Sourcing

Special issue call for papers from Strategic Outsourcing

Call for papers deadline: 30 January 2010

Guest Editors: Dr Bill Hefley and Ron Babin

Strategic Outsourcing: An International Journal aims to foster and lead the international debate on global sourcing and outsourcing. It provides a central, authoritative and independent forum for the critical evaluation and dissemination of research and development, applications, processes and current practices relating to the design, implementation and undertaking of strategic outsourcing. Strategic Outsourcing: An International Journal places a strong emphasis on applied research with relevant implications for both knowledge and practice.

The impact of environmental policies, Green IT, and corporate social responsibility requirements on outsourcing and off-shoring decisions has been identified as both a growing trend and an emerging research priority. Increasing debates surrounding sourcing and its impacts, globalization, corporate social responsibility, climate change, unsustainable growth, corporate scandals, and the questioning of the morality of global capitalism -- all suggest that the complex relationship between business, the state and civil society is undergoing change. Emerging concerns over the ethical and social responsibilities of corporations have resulted in the scrutinizing of companies regarding their sourcing activities, their social and environmental impacts, and the emergence of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) actions by sourcing organizations -- both clients and service providers.

As CSR has evolved as a concept, so have the research and literature seeking to understand it. However, much of this CSR research has not focused on sourcing and its value networks.

Thus, our purpose in this issue is to identify how CSR is manifested in sourcing settings, which are the key CSR actions and approaches employed in global sourcing, and how are current theory and practice genuinely able to address the challenges that face sourcing professionals working in global environments? Are the strategies used by business a sound basis on which to set up socially responsible outsourcing, or do theoretical approaches and practices need to change? The objective of this special issue is to facilitate a critical discussion and analysis of the role of CSR in sourcing and value network management practices.

This special issue will encourage a broad approach to CSR in sourcing. We would encourage papers from a broad range of disciplinary backgrounds and perspectives and from a diverse range of theoretical traditions. The Industry Viewpoint section of Strategic Outsourcing: An International Journal invites industrial practitioners from around the world to present their point of view on this very relevant subject area. We encourage authors to submit manuscripts that address developments in this important field, and potential topics include, but are not limited to:
