Closing date 1 January 2010
Globalisation of supply chains, growing international trade, changing consumer requirements, and new and emerging markets are some of the factors that impact on the complexity of supply chain management today. This is in sharp relief against a global recession and credit crunch which has created additional risk; changes in demand in one country initiating ripple effects, not only in individual local economies but also in the economies of several countries. The devastating effect of the global downturn has exposed the problems of unbalanced economies and inefficient supply chains. There have been instances of entire industries in meltdown and of many companies struggling to keep afloat.
Supply chain managers must think about the long-term consequences of short-term measures taken in the current climate; drastic actions may have adverse effects on future business interests. In this difficult environment, one solution to business survival is to understand supply chain performance. The role of planning in the supply chain has emerged as key to those companies that will survive when the dust settles. Good often comes out of bad and the unforeseen severity of the recession due to the credit crunch could be an opportunity to explore new challenges and opportunities for supply chain professionals. The aim should be to do things better, more efficiently and at less cost, so that companies are in a position to grow when economies improve.
Investigating the impact of the global recession and credit crunch provides the opportunity to expose, understand and articulate critical and contemporary issues facing supply chain professionals. In so doing we can build upon and extend theory and improve our practical understanding of current supply chain issues.
We therefore encourage authors to submit conceptual and empirical manuscripts, which address this important context. Topics might include, but are not limited to:-
• Manufacturing in developed and developing economies
• Initiatives to improve financial performance and sustainability
• Inventory optimisation
• Forecasting and planning
• Supply chain strategy
• Vulnerability and risk
• Procurement and outsourcing
• Supply chain relationships
• Innovation and new product development
• Technology
