Author Guidelines for Emerald Series and Books
Preparing your manuscript for submission
Before you start
Ensure the style you use is consistent throughout. Familiarize yourself with the format, style and arrangement of previous volumes in the series, paying special attention to:
- Chapter openings
- Headings of sections and subsections; they must be short, clearly defined and not numbered.
- Figure numbering and citation
- Table numbering and citation
- Equation numbering and citation
- Literature citation style and structure of the literature list; see also the references section.
Order of material
Please adhere to the following order (per chapter):
- Title page (Title, Author(s), Affiliations)
- Main text; try to subdivide into sections using headings/subheadings.
- Acknowledgements
- Appendix
- References
- Figure legends
- Tables
Manuscript requirements
- Once accepted for publication, the final version should be sent to the editor electronically by email or CD using Word or Rich Text Format
- Chapter files should be named in accordance to the surname of the lead author
- Each article or contributed chapter must be accompanied by a completed and signed Manuscript Release Form
- The author must ensure the final version is complete, grammatically correct and without spelling or typographical errors.
- The preferred file format is Word. Another acceptable format for technical/maths content is rich text format.
Figures, Tables and Illustrations
- All Figures (charts, diagrams and line drawings) should be submitted electronically. Figures should be of clear quality, in black and white and numbered consecutively with arabic numerals.
- Electronic figures created in other applications should be copied from the origination software and pasted into a blank MS Word document or saved and imported into a MS Word document by choosing "Insert" from the menu bar, "Picture" from the drop-down menu and selecting "From File..." to select the graphic to be imported.
- Illustrations should also be submitted electronically. Do not use screen dumps since their resolution is too low.
- Make sure illustrations are clearly labelled (label the illustration with the chapter and figure number).
- Files of illustrations/figures are optional, but will be used if possible. For usable file formats, please note the following:
- If the original figure/illustration is created in Photoshop (Halftones – 300/600 dpi, linetone - 600 dpi, Lineart -1000 dpi), send the files in tiff or jpg format.
- If the original figure/illustration is created in Adobe Illustrator, send the files in ai, eps, wmf or svg format.
- If the original figure/illustration is created in CorelDraw, send the files in cdr, wpg, wmf or cmx format.
- If the original figure/illustration is created in Chemdraw, send the files in cdx or chm format.
- If the original figure/illustration is created in MS Word or MS Excel or MS Powerpoint, send the files in doc or xls or ppt format respectively.
Note: In general we charge for colour printing. Please consult the Editor or the Publisher.
- To prepare screenshots, simultaneously press the “Alt” and “Print screen” keys on the keyboard, open a blank Microsoft Word document and simultaneously press “Ctrl” and “V” to paste the image. (Capture all the contents/windows on the computer screen to paste into MS Word, by simultaneously pressing “Ctrl” and “Print screen”.)
- In the text of the paper the preferred position of all figures/illustrations should be indicated by typing on a separate line the words “Take in Figure (No.)” or “Take in Plate (No.)”. Tables should be typed and included as part of the manuscript. They should not be submitted as graphic elements.
- Supply succinct and clear captions for all tables, figures and plates.
- Ensure that tables/figures/illustrations are complete with necessary superscripts shown, both next to the relevant items and with the corresponding explanations or levels of significance shown as footnotes in the tables and figures.
For all figures, tables and illustrations you wish to reproduce from another source, please ensure you:
- include full references (including Publisher name)
- clear permission for any content not authored by you, and attach a copy of this approval to your submission
- If you include images from a website:
- Please note if an image is available through a Google Search etc - this does NOT necessarily mean that it is copyright free
- Please include the full reference
- Web address
- Date accessed
- Any other details e.g.
- Publisher Name
- Title of their publication
- Title of their Article/Chapter
- Page numbers (start and finish)
- Content you are using (whether you want to republish the whole article or figure/table/Illustration etc)
- Details of the figure/table/illustration (e.g. THEIR figure number)
Mathematics and Linguistic Characters
For reasons of conversion it is preferred, albeit not mandatory, that mathematics/linguistic characters in the file are produced through the facilities of the program itself (e.g. the equation editor of MS Word, or LaTeX for maths). If the equations have been produced by making use of some special program other than that used for the body of the text, the conversion to the typesetting system is a more complex matter.
References
- References to other publications must be in Harvard style and carefully checked for completeness, accuracy and consistency. This is very important in an electronic environment because it enables your readers to exploit the Reference Linking facility on the database and link back to the works you have cited through CrossRef. You should include all author names and initials and give any journal title in full.
- You should cite publications in the text: (Adams, 2006) using the first named author’s name or (Adams and Brown, 2006) citing both names of two authors, or (Adams et al., 2006), when there are three or more authors. At the end of the paper a reference list in alphabetical order should be supplied:
- For books: surname, initials, (year), title of book, publisher, place of publication, e.g. Harrow, R. (2005), No Place to Hide, Simon & Schuster, New York, NY.
- For book chapters: surname, initials, (year), “chapter title”, editor’s surname, initials, title of book, publisher, place of publication, pages, e.g. Calabrese, F.A. (2005), “The early pathways: theory to practice – a continuum”, in Stankosky, M. (Ed.), Creating the Discipline of Knowledge Management, Elsevier, New York, NY, pp. 15-20.
- For journals: surname, initials, (year), “title of article”, journal name, volume, number, pages, e.g. Capizzi, M.T. and Ferguson, R. (2005), “Loyalty trends for the twenty-first century”, Journal of Consumer Marketing, Vol. 22 No. 2, pp. 72-80.
- For electronic sources: if available online the full URL should be supplied at the end of the reference.
Endnotes
Notes or Endnotes should be used only if absolutely necessary and must be identified in the text by consecutive numbers, enclosed in square brackets and listed at the end of the article.
Subject Index
If you wish to include a subject index, please prepare an alphabetical list of keywords
Author Index
If you wish to include an author index, please inform the Commissioning Editor / Assistant Commissioning Editor upon submission of the manuscript. A list of names does not need to be supplied with the manuscript. Macmillan have an automated programme for generating the author index.
Proof Corrections
Should you wish to make corrections to your proofs, follow one of the following options:
- Provide your corrections as annotated PDFs using the annotation tool available in Acrobat and send as an email attachment.
- Provide your corrections listed in an email itself or as a Word file attachment, specifying the page number and corresponding line number
or
- Scan the pages containing corrections. If you wish to do this, please print the pages from the pdf and mark your corrections legibly in RED ink on the applicable page. Please send your corrections in PDF, TIFF or JPEG format, preferably in PDF, and send as an email attachment. Please send all the pages of your contribution even if some of the pages do not contain any correction. This procedure assures that none of your corrections are missed.
If there are no corrections in your contribution, please inform the typesetters via e-mail.
