Key considerations for proposing authors/editors:
What is your rationale for publication?
- Is there a gap in the current book/series market?
- Will the publication have international applicability and reach?
What is the proposed editorial scope and coverage of the book/series?
- What are the key themes that the book/series will cover?
- What will make it stand out from the competition? What are the proposed book/series’ unique selling points?
If you are proposing an edited book or series, how will you attract submissions to the proposed publication?
Who will be the book/series’ target audience, both in terms of authors and users?
What is the composition of the research field, in terms of number of researchers and geography?
Where and how can the book/series be effectively promoted?
- Are there any conferences it could be promoted at?
- Where is the research taking place?
How will the book/ series position itself amongst the competition?
- What are its unique selling points?

What will happen to your proposal once submitted?
Your proposal will be fully researched against market needs, demand and competition; evaluated internally alongside Emerald’s publishing plan and strategy; and by external experts in the given field. This process can take anything from three to six months. Once completed, a decision will be made whether to commission your work for publication.
How to prepare your manuscript
When your book/volume has been approved, your final manuscript should be prepared and delivered according to the following steps:
- Each chapter should be saved as a separate Word file and named appropriately by chapter number and title
- The final manuscript should be submitted as a Word document via email or on a CD-Rom to the relevant Commissioning Editor/Assistant Commissioning Editor
- The following items must be delivered with the final manuscript:
- table of contents
- completed and signed Manuscript Release Forms (link to document) by the authors of each chapter
- synopsis for inclusion on the back cover of the book/volume
- list of contributors with full contact details
- list of keywords for subject index (if appropriate

What can I do to help to promote my book?
There are many ways that you can help to promote your book, these include;
- Make use of your network of contacts and ask your colleagues to review your book, this can either be done through Amazon or provided to your Emerald marketing contact who will then ensure that it appears on promotional literature etc.
- Ask your Emerald marketing contact to provide you with leaflets/flyers/posters as appropriate. You can then take leaflets and flyers to conferences and events and display a poster outside your office door.
- Notify your Emerald contact of any opportunities such as events or listservs that you think might be useful so that they can look in to the possibility of promoting your book through them.
- Alter your email signature to feature details of your book so that all of your contacts are made aware.
- Link to any pages about your book within the Emerald website from any personal web pages you may have so that visitors to your site may click through.
- Make your Emerald marketing contact aware of any courses that your feel your book may be relevant to in order for them to fully explore the possibilities for adoption.
