After spending time in industry with BICC and Westinghouse I returned to teach Control Engineering at the University of Sussex. I was a Tutorial Fellow, a Lecturer and then a Reader at that University before transferring to Leicester as a Professor in 1985. I held a visiting position at the University of California at Berkeley. I was Head of the Department of Engineering at Leicester from 1988 to 1995.
I am a Fellow of the Institution of Electrical Engineers (IEE) and a Chartered Engineer. I have been on the organising committee of several international conferences and on the editorial board of the international journals such as Sensor Review and Electromyography and Kinesiology. I am Recorder of the Medical Sciences Committee of the British Association for the Advancement of Science.
